God help the other team if I start in midfield.

As someone who has not been around for every game please tell me if I am speaking out of place... having been there however however for every preseason game mind... In training for me, spotting the players who really want it (i.e. in my basic terms means determination) is bloody obvious. I think every one of us could pick our own choice of 3 or 4 match winners and if so, prob 90% of us would come up with the same few players so we are not mugs. At the end the day boys it is Sunday League football, no disrespect but in training on Thursday it was all plain to see what our strength was: Attack. Totally going with the attack policy that a few of the others seem to be recommending, Guy & Pat have the touch at the mo and lets be honest, a strikeforce of Gut, Pat and the cocknose himself..(yes he's me's my best mate... but holding midfielder...??!!??) Carlos will surely link up with sort of stuff Johan Cryuff only dreamed about (a tad OTT i'll admit!!). You boys must see what is missing recently, admittedly I've not been around much recently to witness myself (been to busy watching United fire blanks at Old Trafford), but seeing the standard in training on Thursday, no probs if we get a bit organisation and fitness. Being a total know-it-all, as I am... my only beef is that subs and in-game decisions should not be decided by someone who knows f##k all about tactics. In the current state of play I'm sure everyone would prefaer match-making decisions when made by: Team manager Captain Goalkeeper Who, currently occupied by current the personel are pretty clued up individuals. My basic point is that lets all talk a bit more on the pitch and off it. In all honesty training last Thursday I really enjoyed as it seemed alot more competitive than previous nights... somethingwe need to install into ourselves on matchday starting this Sunday. The problem we have is there is no point working out an attacking line up and tactics when several members of the team, who would be vital for this line up show up very late most weeks. In training we looked very good, and had a good turn out. Can you honestly say that everyone that was at training will be at the game, and be on time and sober? It's in the hands of the players... Also, trainig form means nothing. Somone can look very good in training, but poor in a match as the dynamics are completely different. What we lack at O'Neills is dicipline and organisation. We always have. If players play their positions and hold their positions then we have a decent base to work from. I've always said this... we need to work on putting the ball ahead of our wingers so they can run onto it and cross it at speed. When we do this we will start to destroy teams!!

time for me to say my piece as feeling quite left out........
Right, not going to arse around just going to be blunt. We are an attacking team.......correct We have some really good players in our team.....correct We should be top of the league if we had carried on from where we left off last season....correct We look great in training.....correct
But boys,we are not playing as a team, way too much bitching, even i could hear what some of the substitutes where saying on the sidelines last week,i feel that last week the side we started with was possibly our strongest line-up,obviously a few players could be swapped around but it really winds me up with some of the players self belief in their own ability and they believe that they are the best.......im lucky to be playing this season in goal as Claws left and i can say that he is a better keeper than me.....if i was to be a midfielder this season i would find it near impossible to get into the starting XI and i can admit that so why oh why can't some players just accept that there are better players infront of them and just get on with it and instead of whinging on the sidelines, get behind the team. Cheer us on,dont just stand there smoking, drinking tea, eating burgers from a wanky kosovan snack bar. We are all a team,we meet as a team (well some of us),we go on the pitch as a team but when we leave its like we dont know each other. Now that we have a manager like Dowie (looks and sheer determanation) lets make the most of it and take the attitude that we have in training and put it into practice on the pitch. C'MON O'NEILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst thing my club could do is to play the best 11 eleven ever week regardless. Look at teh supposed best 11. How many are reliable? How many can you say, hand on heart, will be there at 9am every week (baring work commitments).
Our squad needs to play also. The players (I know who you mean) who stand on the sidelines whinging are usually the ones that are first to the meeting point, are never late, pay their fees on time, attend training and pay without fail every week and want to do what is best for the club. We are a Sunday league team. Therefore we can not continue to pick the supposed best 11 every week and leave out the weaker players. Everyone deserves a chance. The first dropped should be the ones that don't attend the pub after games (as it affects the future of the club). The ones that dont bother with training should also missout.
Jim, it's very easy to say the first team should play ever week. I seem to recall you leaving because you couldn't get Claws out of the team. I don't want players leaving the club. I formed this club so people could play football, regardless of ability. I didn't leave the playing staff because I didn't think I'd get in, I left because I didn't have time to run the club from top to bottom.
Like you say we should be a team, but until the (supposed) better players turn up on time (or at least get dropped for incuring a £25 fine for causing a late kick off) then we never will be.

If we did this much talking on the pitch i would never have to gee anyone up again! Firstly Steve has made some good points and so has jim (it is a wanky serbian snack bar though!) After the two teams idea unfortunately falling through we were left with one side, 20 players and hopefully the desire to win something. (I KNOW I WANT IT!) There are several players on the team without naming names who i think every one in my position would pick. Then there is a poole of about 10 some who can't be there every week to fill the rest of the positions. I hate making the team selection, i think of everyone as a friend and don't want to lose them as friends or as players for the team. Thats the word TEAM. i know we are not Arsenal (Scum) or Man utd (tossers) and that people are not happy to sit on the bench week in week out, but please give it a chance. i've been in charge for three games and tried to bring a bit of consistancy to selection so we can start winning. Everyone will get a chance to play unfortunately some more than others. Just a quickie Steve about cocknose i happen to think he is an outstanding midfielder but in the years i've played with him i think i've scored more goals so potent strike force? Jim even if claws came back loyalty goes a long way and you are the number one shirt holder and will stay that way. Just so everyone is prepared i will be asking people to furnish me with what they think the starting eleven from all the players available should be. It is so you all appreciate how hard it is to leave people out and to give me an idea of what people think the best team is. It will be for my eyes only so put what ever you like leave whoever out. I now know why football managers go grey and look very old so in the words of the great late brian clough you can tell that young man from me to get the fucking beers in or hes dropped. 8-)management1

having made no comment as to me leaving last season i feel its fairly irrelavant in bringing it up. I appreciate that claws is a better keeper than me and i know that i am lucky to be playing week in week out. Yeah ok,i left last season because you wound me up to the point where i thought that i was going to explode. I was playing well and you treated me like a child. I acted like one from then on. Left the club, didnt like it and then came back 3 weeks later with my tail between my legs and i thank you for giving me the 2nd chance to prove myself as a drunken midfielder (if you can put me in that bracket).
Now is a time to be honest, lots of people are beating around the bush. How many players want to come down on a sunday and get beat every week,i thought last season was a turning point,a big turning point. We started winning!!!!! Reason for this was that we were playing as a team, this season we aren't. Full stop. How many players can say that they are happy with their personal performances? Lets be honest now boys. I for one aren't completely happy although i do feel now that i am playing behind one of the best defences i've played with but still seem to be conceding too many goals. I thought today,my performance was pretty good, didnt shout much but was down to very sore throat and the only goal i'll put my hand up to is the last, should've held it. The team doesn't seem to be learning from our mistakes, when we play teams we should be remembering thier style (or apparent lack of it as today showed) but we still lost. Things need to change and fast as i personally are hearing rumblings (not just in my large stomach) about people wanting to leave. I play football with peolpe i regard as good mates, thats how it started and now feel i've made gopod mates through the extra players coming in. I dont want to play for another team, who does?? But if we dont start sorting things out, letting people speak etc then we will all be playing for other teams or not at all. Im leaving now to get ready and hopfully seeing a group of disgruntled friends in the pub to sort of the future of our team.

Final word before locking goes to the owner... I never said Chris was coming back to replace Jim. Chris will never play for one of my teams again. My point was that it is easy to say "pick the best team" when you are part of it, or very close to it. Last season, Jim (sorry for winding you up by the way, wasn't intentional ), Chris was our number 1 keeper, before you left you gave me a fair amout of earache, now if Chris was still around would you still be calling for Bill to pick the best 11 knowing you weren't in it? It's a hypothetical question as you're bound to say yes... Bill, good point about Carl's scoring prowess, I outscored him in his last season for us... I feel your pain at picking a side, I did it for years and continue to get grief for it. TBH the best way forward I found is to use your squad. We had a biggish squad last year, and most of the players were decent. I had in my mind my best 11 but still alternated Colin and Jim in centre mid, Rick and Ash on the wing, Me and Darren Meaghan up front, Wallis and Taff at right back as well as others. I don't think too many people were unhappy with the line ups last season, the benched players were quite happy as they knew they would get another chance to shine, which gave them an incentive to do their best on the pitch when given a chance. Picking the "best 11" regardless of reliability isn't always the right way to go. I formed the club to a group of mates could play football. It seems like the players the club was built on are surplus to requirements, and that isn't right. Especially, like I have said, when the players getting in don't really seem to have any respect for the club management or care about getting to the ground on time.
