CELTS FC 2 AFC OLD BANK 3
Mat 2, Alex 1
Man of match Aubrey
No wanker of the week
Six games left this season and all of them big games, we have to win to keep the pressure on Melfort. It was cold, it was wet, it was an afternoon games and it was our Nemesis for the season Celts (knocked us out of two cups!) I have to admit i was more worried than Graeme Souness after a vote of confidence from the board!
The team was changed slightly to go for pace and an inform midfield and the game kicked off.
Old Bank had all the early pressure and were playing the ball around well.
Dan had an early chance but scuffed his shot as per the Ed book of how not to shot! Either that or he'd been watching Bills efforts in the warm up.
Mat had a speculative lob cleared off the line, Mark had a couple of long shots and to be fair i started to think it was going to be one of those days.
Celts had the odd chance on the break but in the whole Aubs , superb at the back, Ian a very solid performance and Wallis and Ash both playing well were going to be hard to beat.
Then on 23 minutes the breakthrough we needed when a great corner by Mark looked like it was sailing into the net Alex got a touch with his head, or did he? and it was 1-0. Mark claimed it, Alex claimed it fuck it i claim it! Dubious goals panel in the changing room awarded it to Alex! 1-0.
Celts came at us hard for the next 10 minutes, a great point blank save by Jim and then resolute defending when Aubrey threw himself in front of the rebound, then Ash threw himself in front of the next one and we cleared our lines.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Dan was marauding up the wing, and once again Lee turned back the clock to 1966 when he was a mere 30 year old and fit.
Alex was awesome in the air and Mark , although getting a little petulant with getting kicked alot, was still running the midfield like Lord Wellington at the battle of Waterloo (and no me and Lee were not actually there!)
Then oh joy of joys, elation, triumph and ejaculation! A good build up, a flick from Guy and Mat finished to make it 23 goals for the season and 2-0 on 42 minutes a great time to score, what the hell any time is a good time to score.
Half time talk was just more of the same and dig in at the back.
Within 2 minutes of the re start a hopeful shot from distance rebounded off Jim who couldn't hold the ball in the wet slipping conditions and as he managed to flick the ball away from the forward following up he was taken out by the forward. From the refs viewpoint it may have looked the other way round and in fact he awarded the penalty.
The forward lined it up he shot the penalty , it rebounded off the post and he then tapped it in. Nice try wanker but learn the rules , someone else has to touch the ball first! The score remained 2-0 and we got a goal kick and a let off.
Celts came at us with everything they had and the long ball over in the rain and wet was catching us out on occasions, but the back four dug in and held tight until on 60 minutes the pulled one back.
A defensive frailty was showing in that we were not following the runners on the ball over the top and they were getting most of the second balls from it. They played on that for the next 30 minutes, something to be aware of next time!
Bill changed the formation to leave Mat up front on his own and sacrificed Guy for an extra midfielder to protect the defense and we started to get the ball more and create a few chances.
Then on 82 minutes who should pop up on the edge of the box with a low drive under the keeper yes we love him it was Mat to make it 3-1.
Carl, Gary and Steve had now replaced Dan, Guy and the injured Mark (who had also managed to get himself booked! wanker of the week??)
We held out until with only two minutes to go (allegedly i made it about 93 minutes already played!) and again the ball over a rebound they were quicker to and 3-2.
They sensed hope a come back one of them put Ash into the back of the net as he tried to retrieve the ball , learn the rule mate its the ball in the net that gets a goal not one of our players. The slight scuffle saw Bill running on ready to stick his flag where the sun don't shine. But it all calmed down with one look from Jim (scarey!)
The final whistle blew and we had won. Six games on the bounce, we were now second by 8 points (although celts have a game in hand. And quite frankly unless we fuck up promotion is ours for the taking and who knows Melfort can still slip up!
I am proud of each and every player, the commitment, the squad mentality of the subs who gave there all and did not whinge, the battle we showed and the sheer class which won us the game.
5 games left and we could have a great end of season.
No wanker of the week i'm in too much of a good mood to name one!
