TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH!
Melfort Eagles FC 2 AFC OLD BANK 7
Mat Cefai 6 (six)
Dan mcgullion 1
Man of the match - Mat
Wanker of the week - Wallis and Bill
The day was finally here the long awaited top of the table clash with Melfort.
The team had for been named the day before and with seven players away and only Bill on the subs bench to be honest i was worried.
The game kicked off and in the first five minutes we looked very shakey at the back but Jim pulled off two fantastic saves (although when pissed he admitted one was for the cameras!) to keep it nil nil.
The re vamped back four then gelled together and we looked a much better unit.
Then came the break through on 17 minutes a through ball to Mat from yes you guessed it Mark saw him cut inside the defender and slot the ball home 1-0 and we were off to a good start.
We were now all over them at the back like Wallis with some old tart the night before!
on the stroke of 22 minutes Wallis did a john smiths 'AVE IT clearance which went straight down the middle and then Mat pounced to nod the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 2-0.
Then disaster struck, we failed to clear our lines and the opposition manager manged to toe poke the ball from the edge of the box into the corner beating Jims despairing dive to make it 2-1.
My hair was getting greyer by the minute and i was starting to feel a bit like a bloke with Sol Cambell stood behind him (i felt i was gonna get stuffed!)
However three minutes later Lee filling in at right midfield rolled back the years beat his man ran to the byline and crossed to Mat who volleyed home for his hatrick (completed in 36 minutes! thats 35 minutes longer than wallis took the night before apparently!)
3-1 up and we were not taking the foot off the accelerator 43 minutes in and a corner by Mark was flicked on by Alex and guess who was there to volley it home ...........yes it was Mat for his fourth.
Melfort were starting to call for a drug test i just replied that Mat was already taking the piss out of them! although i'm not 100 per cent certain that was anadin he took before the game!
As if it couldn't get any better 45 minutes played and a very poor free kick by Wallis was flicked by Gary to Dan who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards and made it 5-1.
The half time whistle went and i walked across the pitch to deliver the half time team talk with a great big smile on my face (and not because of the sol Campbell comment earlier!)
After last weeks team talk of 50 fucks this week was all pink and fluffy. We were talking, encouraging each other and really putting in the best display this club has ever had.
Ian was playing like he'd never been away and with aubrey in the back we were rock solid. Ash and Wallis were playing to both their high potentials. Alex and Mark were sheer perfection. Dan was back to his very best and Lee was playing like a man half his age (30!)
Gary was strong and always causing problems and Jim was well unbeatable.
Mat well what words can describe his first half performance. What would the second half bring?
Melfort rallied round for the first 20 minutes of the second half and brought on their man striker who caused us a few problems but nothing the boys could not deal with.
Wanker of the week moment from Bill a cross was flicked on three Melfort lads were offside so badly i forgot to flag as i was looking right at the ref who had obviously seen it as well but no he did not give it and by then it was too late 5-2 and yes i admit i am a wanker!
With 19 minutes left Dan played a through ball to Mat who shot home to restore the balance of power and make it 6-2!
With the sight of Bill striping off for a cameo appearance Mat was looking worried as his performance had really just not been up to scratch! So for good measure on 78 minutes he latched onto a long ball by Alex and with the deft touch of a quality player chipped the advancing keeper for his 6th goal and our 7th.
I was politely told by him what would happen if i took him off and to be fair i should have so he could have had the standing ovation he deserved from both teams.
But Gary who had worked hard all game and not had a chance due to greedy mat taking the limelight, made way for Bill to stretch his legs for 8 minutes.
Indeed his first touch was a lovely volley which the keeper saved. He then forgot which way he was kicking and tried a through ball for the melfort striker to run onto and cross but Jim pulled Bills balls out of the fire with a lovely save.
Ash ruined the clubs good conduct and fair play award with his first booking of the season and only our second.
Comedy moment missed by almost all but me and the ref. Melfort player down injured, Jim in possession of the ball went to throw it out but before he did the ref blew the whistle to check on the player. Jim threw the ball out of play.
Melfort returned the ball from a throw but the ref should have restarted with a drop ball and when wallis picked the ball up to take a goal kick he was technically hand-balling it! As no one appealed the ref let it go thank goodness!
The game ended 7-2. We are now 3 points behind melfort with a game in hand and goal difference is not as far apart as i thought. If we continue in this vein of form WE CAN AND WE WILL WIN THE LEAGUE!
'AVE IT!
